Antiziganism post
Educational work critical of antiziganism

Antiziganism refers to discriminatory behaviour towards people who are classified by individuals or institutions under the stigmatising term ‘gypsy’. This discrimination and stereotyping primarily affects members of the Sinti* and Roma* minority recognised in Germany, but also other people and groups of people, for example Yenish, Travellers or other people who are read as ‘Gypsies’.

The aim of our work is to inform prospective teachers, educators and educational multipliers about the topic of antiziganism, to sensitise them and to support them in developing preventive measures against antiziganism and intervening in antiziganist incidents.

Our work focusses on the following topics:

  • History of the Sinti and Roma
  • Genocide of Sinti and Roma during National Socialism
  • Social functions of the ‘gypsy’ construct
  • Social marginalisation practices of people who are read as ‘Gypsies’, especially within the institution of school
  • Memorial site pedagogy

The Hessian State Association of German Sinti and Roma played a key role in the establishment of a centre for critical antiziganism education at the TU Darmstadt. There has been a productive collaboration between the practical lab at the Institute for General Education and Vocational Education and the state association for years, which is constantly being cultivated through new joint projects.
